Solange
Hmm so yes, got the chance to hear some of Solange’s music from her forthcoming album. I never heard her first album, and will be honest and say I listened to her new tracks with pre-conceived notions; Beyonce Pt 2! I’m not ashamed to say I adore Beyonce, I think she’s a pro and I love the glamour. I feel about her the way my mother felt about Diana, aka "Miss Ross". Anyway, no comparisons to be made with Solange and her super-star sibling. I could, at times, hear similarities - but for the most part their vocal stylings are completely different.
The lead single from her album (no release date or title yet) is "I Decided". Different, it sounds like she’s straining a bit. I like the hook, it’s cute and very dance-able. It’s a record I would listen to on a sunny day with the top down. The next track I heard, "Champagne Chronic Nightcap" (yes, that’s the name of the song) sounds just like you think it would; wrong. I was like, hold on lil’ sis! Indeed, we all appreciate a good champagne chronic nightcap, Solange is correct there. But penning a song about it - something else. She coos for her suitor o’-the evening to "light the dro, light the dro, light the dro"....a little too much for me. I appreciate hearing about "dro" more from a man than a woman, pardon me but that’s the truth (unless it’s Da Brat, Ms Jade, Lil’ Kim or Lady Of Rage or somethin’). Lil’ Wayne guests on the track, that makes sense. Hell would freeze over before this one gets airplay. Actually, Danity Kane had a number one album so let me fall back, I can’t call it. In the spirit of artistic expression and free speech, God bless you Solange.
My favorite of the three tracks is "White Picket Dreams". It has Lucy Pearl-styled harmonies and I love some Lucy Pearl (excuse me, loved...dammit). Solange’s vocals sound the best on this one I think, I like the layers. I’m not sure if she’s writing her own material, I know she’s done lots of writing in the past. Haven’t researched that far but, the writing varies from track to track - some for better, and some for worse.
It’s not that I don’t think Solange is a strong enough artist to do her thing on the solo tip, I absolutely think she is. With some growth she could really stand alone - the Knowles name doesn’t hurt, either (keep it real). Her vocals are comparable to Mia, or Tamia - maybe they could form another SWV?! Heeeeeeey! I never got over them splitting up. I’ve been waiting for the next SWV, Total, TLC, for far too long...
I think Solange is one to watch. Once the machine kicks in, she’ll move units.
Elvis vs. Mariah
The weeks news that Mariah Carey had officially surpasses Elvis as the solo artist with the most #1 singles is now officially been challenged by Elvis Presley Enterprises. When Carey's "Touch My Body" shot to No. 1 on this week's chart, it gave the singer her 18th No. 1, the most by any solo artist on Billboard's Hot 100.
Haters, I mean, readers have pointed out that a post on Elvis's website, the business entity created by the Estate of Elvis Presley and the Elvis Presley Trust, claims that the King had, in fact, 18 No. 1 singles, meaning Carey would have simply tied Presley.
Billboard's chart guru Geoff Mayfield says confusion lies with 1958 chart-toppers "Don't Be Cruel" and "Hound Dog." The Presley site lists the two songs as separate No. 1 singles.
Seemingly makes sense, except that when "Don't Be Cruel" and "Hound Dog" topped the chart, they did so as one double-sided release. Writes Mayfield in his column, "Billboard's charts department and the magazine's ranking trivia expert, Fred Bronson, consider those two songs comprise but one single, and thus a singular No. 1 shared by the two songs."
Bobby prepares to collect a check $$$

Bobby Brown has confirmed he was unfaithful to his former wife Whitney Houston, getting down to the dirt with details of the their marriage in his autobiography 'Bobby Brown: The Truth, the Whole Truth and Nothing But'.
Brown writes: "I never used cocaine until after I met Whitney. Before then, I had experimented with other drugs, but marijuana was my drug of choice. At one point in my life, I used drugs uncontrollably. I was using everything I could get my hands on, from cocaine to heroin, weed and cooked cocaine." Brown also says that Whitney was under pressure to squash rumors of a sexual relationship with her female assistant, Robyn Crawford. "In Whitney's situation, the only solution was to get married and have kids," he said. Houston has always denied rumors of a romantic relationship with Crawford, even saying in a Rolling Stone interview, "People want to know if there's a relationship. Our relationship is that we're friends. We've been friends since we were kids."
Brown isn't throwing Whitney entirely under the bus, though. He admits their marriage was in trouble for awhile, and his cheating on numerous occasions didn't help.
"I am guilty of sleeping with other women,” says Brown. “Women are always throwing themselves at you. I'm only human, so I would make the mistake and bite the hook sometimes. I let the testosterone take over."
Um, ok.
Brown also describes his 14-year marriage as "doomed from the very beginning." "I think we got married for all the wrong reasons," he says in the book. "Now, I realize Whitney had a different agenda than I did when we got married ... I believe her agenda was to clean up her image."
Whitney's rep responded with this statement: "Miss Houston is sad that Bobby feels he need to say such things but she chooses to take the high road and will not speak badly about the father of her child even if it's to set the record straight."
The book is due on shelves next month, but I've got a promo copy at the crib that I can't put down! It's worth reading. Bobby's a mess...
Remy Ma letters
XXL Magazine reports Remy Ma's future husband, Papoose (the two will be wed in prison according to him), has made a statement that Remy would be appealing her case. He's asked that fans send letters requesting a short jail sentence to lettersforremy@gmail.com. Remy was found guilty this week of assault and related charges, and the presiding judge ordered her taken into custody until her sentencing next month. She could serve time for anywhere from 8 to 25 years.
The "shorten Remy's sentence" messages will presumably be shown to the judge prior to her April 23 sentencing. As for the couple, they had planned to wed at the end of April and have set no new date for their pending nuptuals.
